Dr. iur. Hannes Tretter is a retired Associate Professor for Fundamental and Human Rights at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna, since 2021 Chairman of the Board of the Vienna Forum for Democracy and Human Rights, and since 2013 Director of the Straniak Academy for Democracy and Human Rights. From 1992 to 2019 he was Co-founder, Administrative Director and Scientific Co-Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights (BIM).
He was also Vice-Chair of the Management Board of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights from 2007 to 2012 and Deputy Director of the Human Rights Research Centre at the University of Vienna from 2014 to 2018. From 2003 to 2021 he acted as Head, Deputy-head or Expert of numerous "EU Twinning projects" on the implementation of the EU acquis communautaire in the areas of democratisation, rule of law and human rights in EU candidate countries.
In addition to publishing, lecturing and speaking at various universities, international, European and state institutions and organisations, he continues to lead academic projects as well as provides expert opinions, advises in proceedings before Austrian supreme courts and represents complaints before the European Court of Human Rights.
